Lesson Structure:

  • 1/ Trumpet fundamentals - this covers standard rudiment and pedagogy of playing the instrument, and developing the skills necessary to perform in any style.

    • a. Flow studies - developing a beautiful and even sound across all registers on the trumpet

    • b. Flexibility / Range - developing strength and endurance by targeting the embouchure muscles; also related to increased range 

    • c. Articulation / Tonguing - different articulations required to play the horn (syllables, double/triple tonguing) 

    • d. Scales / Music theory - basic scales, shapes, and concepts to improve proficiency on trumpet 

    • e. Stylistic - approaching different stylistic concepts; etudes, excerpts, studies

  • 2/ Jazz - this covers a wide array of topics within the genre of Jazz; this will help develop your jazz "chops" to perform in everything from jazz combo to big band and other related ensembles.

    • a. Basic Theory - providing the basic tools and building blocks to better understand Jazz and the fundamental musical foundation

    • b. Improvisation - developing vocabulary and a voice to effectively and efficiently solo in a Jazz context; transcriptions, studies

    • c. Stylistic - developing understanding of different Jazz styles and how to emulate them in our playing; listening exercises
